Child from Bogota, Colombia

John's Ratings:
Pros: Until there was a tiny glitch, they were fine. The dossier was completed according to instructions that, though occasionally vague and contradictory, were more or less accurate.

Cons: 1. When I asked Baker Vistory's Colombia person, Jerri Wegner, why other parents were getting referrals though they had filed after us, I was threatened with being cut off from communications. 2. Several requests [every 2 weeks or so] to have the Bogota attorney investiage the delay were ignored. 3. When I finally demanded that the agency instruct their Bogota attorney to find out why we were not getting a referral, the response was "Dr. Polo looked at the list and your name is not on it." 4. I traveled to Bogota, met their very nice but totally passive attorney, and he still was not able [or not willing more likely] to find out the cause of delay. I fired Alberto Polo, hired another attorney, and 20 minutes later she found out that our daughter's file had been sent to the wrong office. Repeat: 20 MINUTES !!! 5. Once it seemed to be a problem-adoption, Jerri Wegner was passive-aggressive, totally unprofessional, threatening, contemptuously dismissive, and even had the nerve to patronize me. The only problem was that one file had been sent to the wrong office 6. My understanding is that about 1/3 of the adoptions in Austin Texas that use this horrid agency go sour in some way. KidSave International apparently gets a financial referral-fee from this agency so keeps on foisitng them onto potential adoptive parents and DOES NOT DISCLOSE the numerous well-founded complaints about this agency.

Reviews: Ours should have been and ultimately was, a plain-vanilla adoption. If this agency had an active lawyer in Bogota, the very small problem could have been easily identified and corrected. Another friend had her adoption stopped for months - there was a small but significant error in the translation - and the lawyer in Bogota didn't bother looking into this either. If the adoption more or less is going to happen on its own, these guys are marginally competent. However, with the slightest problem they go totally passive. The Colombian coordinator, Jerri Wegenr, and her snotty attitude toward adopting parents certainly didn't help matters either.
