Pros: West Sands was an incredible agency to work with, they were open and available for all of our questions. Many of the questions we had they were unable to provide immediate answers and there were a few delays in process. Though our adoption from beginning to end was only 10 months which from what I hear and read that is fast. Many other agencys have taken two years on average along with price it was an incredible experience. I also can't say enough about the in-country staff. They were just amazing in the entire process and were with us every step of the way, our travels over there have been and were incredible. We were able to experience the culture and spend a lot of time with our kids for the first trip and then everythjing was setup and ready for our second. They are just amazing to work with.
Child's Age: 0y 10m
Start Date: Dec 2009
Completion Date: Dec 2009
Time Until Placement: 0 months
Type: Open, International
Special Needs: No
Child from Ethiopia
Cons: The only issues that I have known or aware of are the leadership in the company and the less insight that they have shown in the past. Though they have hired more people that are actually puching the program and have changed it in a completely different direction. There really is nothing that I can't say that I wouldn't at present recommend them to anyone.

Pros: The only pro about this agency is that it was actually acting as a third party on behalf of our home agency. This meant that we were able to withdraw from their program and have since been placed with a different third party agency.
Child's Age: 0y 0m
Start Date: Oct 2008
Status: Withdrew voluntarily
Type: Closed, International
Special Needs: No
Child from ??, Ethiopia
Cons: In short, we decided to discontinue working with you for following reasons:
1) lack of open and honest communication,
2) the apparent nonchalance and disregard that West Sands has demonstrated to us, and
3) the availability of an alternative agency that will allow us to adopt from Ethiopia with much greater support.
We were not told when our dossier was sent to Ethiopia for a month after it had been sent. We were matched with a child and then told, with no explanation, that the child was not available for adoption. We were promised that our dilemma was at the forefront of West Sands work and they could only produce a referral after we'd informed them of their decision to leave the program. The referral also did not match our needs.
West Sands appeared to be very lacksadaisical with us and did not appreciate the hardship we'd been put through. Their lack of regular, informative updates regarding our situation gave the impression of apathy and negligence.
We were told next to nothing about the child we'd been matched with. No medical report was given. We were also not allowed to send even small items like photos or a blanket. This agency is not conducive to healthy adoptions.
We highly doubt they are bad people at heart, but they appear grossly incompetent and uncaring in their practice. They should not be operating an adoption agency in its current manner.
Reviews: Our home agency, Carolina Hope, has been wonderful in assisting us with the trouble with West Sands. They were forthright in all information disseminated and allowed us to make our own decisions regarding our adoption. They have since quit referring families to West Sands because of the type of issues we've had. We're now happily part of another Ethiopian program and look forward to a successful adoption.
Carolina Hope is also available on this website and is highly rated.
